Randolph Basketball “Hoops Card” Celebrates 31st Year

Each year, the Randolph Boys & Girls Basketball Committee offers for sale it’s annual Hoops Card; a savings “club” card that offers excellent discounts to local restaurants and other fine establishments. Over the past 30 years, the proceeds from the fundraising card has resulted in significant improvements and upgrades to the basketball program here in town, including ongoing contributions to the town parks and school gyms.

The Boys & Girls Basketball Program, run through the Randolph Recreation Department, has over 1000 participants and offers two levels of play; Rec for grades K-12 and Travel for grades 4-8.

The origin of the Hoops Card dates back to 1994 and was started by Jim Behrmann and Chris Minihane as a means to raise money for the basketball program. At that time, according to Behrmann, Randolph did not charge families to participate in recreational sports. We needed the funds to upgrade the facilities and the Hoops Card was the most successful fundraiser the town had ever seen.

Every school benefited from the Boys Basketball Program as the funds collected purchased upgrades for almost every gym in town, from the scoreboards at all four elementary schools and Middle School, to the glass backboards at Fernbrook, to the lighting at the Middle School, the bleachers in the RMS Aux gym, fences at the Brundage Carrell courts, lighting and court upgrades at Freedom Park, padding at Shongum, etc.

The two fathers ran the 2nd and 3rd grade boys clinics for years and contributed over two decades of their time to help build the program to what it is today.

The success of the Hoops Card would not be possible without the support of the many merchants that advertise their savings each and every year. Many of the merchants have been with the program since the beginning and have found it to be an outstanding marketing opportunity and a means to get to know the residents in town. The price of the 2024 Hoops Card is $20 but the savings can translate into hundreds of dollars throughout the year. A win/win for everyone.

Don’t delay as the Boys & Girls Basketball Committees anticipate its cards to be all sold by the end of March. Contact any Travel or Rec coach to purchase your card today.
